The game offers an in-depth look at what we refer to as “justice,” with a plethora of murder, deceit and intrigue. Things are not black and white, and no one person is completely right or completely wrong.

You may be wondering how black you can be compared to a serial killer blowing people’s eyes, but The Lost Judgment delves into the moral gray area of incredibly sensitive issues. So how is this possible?Īs promised, Lost Judgment offers a deeper and more serious story than the first entry. A man appears to have committed murder at exactly the same time he has been convicted of sexual battery, with video evidence of each crime emerging. In the sequel, he and his friends investigate bullying at a local high school before he finds himself embroiled in another murder mystery. Lost Judgment once again follows Takayuki Yagami, a defense attorney-turned-private detective responsible for capturing the serial killer known as Mole in the previous game. Lost Judgment tackles these issues with great sensitivity and despite its more humorous moments, the overall tone of the story is always spot on. The topic gets pretty deep, jumping into the deep end with not only topics video games are typically difficult to discuss or accept, but also expose the ugly side of human nature. Luckily Lost Judgment, like its predecessors, manages to strike a fine balance between the two. While Judgment tends to put it more down to earth - you won’t get castles off the ground or anything - you’d be forgiven for thinking that the humor would undermine the game’s themes of bullying, suicide, and murder.

This contrast between quirky comedy and serious drama is central to both the Judgment series and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s other major hit, Yakuza. RELATED: Lost Judgment Interview: Kazuki Hosokawa on Pandemic Development, Dead Souls, and Betraying Kazuma Kiryu

While grappling with a drainpipe, the camera cuts to an inside scene, where some poor male student is trying to stare in confusion at her legs dangling from the window. It begins a dramatic escape from the school in which I get to use Lost Judgment’s new Assassin’s Creed-style parkour mechanics Climbing walls, hanging from stairs and falling from one surface to another. As I investigate a malfunctioning camera last minute, I suddenly find a schoolgirl yelling at me and accusing me of being a pervert. Students and teachers are none the wiser, and we have already uncovered evidence of bullying on one of the feeds.

Lost Judgment provides laughs aplenty with a brilliant array of side cases and characters, but it crucially tackles trauma and bullying with refreshing honesty and steely conviction when it needs to. There are relatively few changes to be found from Yagami’s original outing outside of increased depth to an already-bombastic combat system, but that’s no bad thing when what came before was so enjoyable. Lost Judgment proves a sequel can feel overtly iterative and still succeed. Ryu Ga Gotoku’s sequel feels genuinely critical of a society that allows children to be bullied and taken advantage of, and, like the original game, not pulling its punches when studying the perpetual nature of police violence and self-service, Lost Judgment isn’t afraid to tackle these tough topics.

Strichart was right to issue such a warning because Lost Judgment doesn’t back down from bullying and the fallout from such social isolation, casting an intense analytical gaze over not just the bullies themselves, but the individuals in our adult society who allow such bullying to proceed uninterrupted.Īfter Judgment’s tale of studying those who have power in society using it to lord over those who don’t, Lost Judgment feels sincere in studying bullying throughout childhood, and how it casts an inescapable shadow over those who intimately know the victim. Lost Judgment’s localization director Scott Strichart warned players prior to launch that it dealt with “various traumas”, requesting that potential customers look after themselves and make sure they’re in the right headspace before delving into Yagami’s new case. In many ways, Lost Judgment’s eclectic side cases are the perfect foil to its more somber main storyline.
